A Virtual Private Server (VPS) is a result of a method of partitioning a physical server into multiple servers so that everything runs as if it were running on a single machine. Each virtual server is capable of operating under its own operating system and also each server can be restarted independently. The practice of partitioning a single server to work on multiple servers has already started with mainframes and has resurfaced with the development of virtualization and technologies for other architectures. While a VPS works with its own copy of the operating system, the clients have access level of root or superuser and therefore, they can install any type of software, which can later be executed under their operating system. Some programs do not run well in virtual environments, including firewalls, anti-virus clients and even other virtual tools; Some VPSs provide strong restrictions, but they are generally lax compared to those that exist on shared storage servers.
